Texas License to Carry
Let Aim High LTC Instructors prepare you for the carrying of a handgun.
The Texas Department of Public Safety currently requires a minimum of 4 to 6 hours not including range time. Average class length depends on numerous factors, including class size, experience and more. The majority of the class is the law and other aspects of carrying a handgun for self defense.
The Texas LTC allows you to carry concealed or open carry in Texas. It is also valid in 30 other states for carry under the laws of those states.
The State requires several instructional areas:
- Use of Force
- Weapons Storage and Safety
- Weapons Laws
- Non-Violent Dispute Resolution
Practical areas:
- Range Qualification
- A written examination with multiple choice and true/false questions.
Equipment:
- Handgun semi or revolver .22 caliber or higher. (See FAQ’s)
Red dot and green dot optics are permitted as of 2023, magnification and lasers are not permitted. - At least 50 rounds of ammo for the gun.
- Hearing and eye protection. (We have loaners at no charge)
Steps to get a Texas License to Carry
- Complete online Application with the state (May be completed before or after class) and the cost is typically $40, but discounted fees exist in certain instances and additional information – List of fees
- Be fingerprinted with state approved provide. Once the online application has been completed with the state, the state will send the details related to scheduling an appointment for fingerprinting. Updated fingerprinting is a requirement and the cost is $10.00.
- Complete required in-classroom training and range qualification. We provide in-person training, and have a partner for online training.
- Submit training certificate and any other documentation requested to DPS via the portal.
LTC Range Qualification
Any approved online classroom training will require Range Qualification/Proficiency Demonstration. The state allows the range portion to be completed before or after the online course. This qualification is offered at a number of different ranges in San Antonio that we have agreements with. The cost is $40 per person.
Texas License to Carry Military
- The minimum age is 18 years of age
- Range Qualification is waived if the military member can provide a range card, handgun or rifle, showing qualification in the last 10 years.
Steps for Military
- Complete online application with the state. No fee for military.
- Once the online application is complete, the state will send Fingerprinting information.
- Complete online training for $49.99 .
- Get fingerprinted. Once you’ve completed your online application with the state they will send you info on how to be fingerprinted.
- Submit required documents to DPS via portal.
Benefits to having a Texas LTC:
- Ability to purchase firearm without an FBI instant check needed.
- Carry in 37 other states besides Texas.
- Under the Texas Labor Code employers cannot prohibit an LTC holder from having a handgun in their vehicle in the company parking area. Non-holders can be prohibited.
- LTC holders are not subject to felony prosecution under the Federal Gun Free School Zone law.
- License holder can carry in most places unless given notice under 30.05, 30.06 or 30.07, where non holder cannot carry there at all.
